BACKGROUND / INFO

This is a three-piece series that was on display at the State Museum Mainz as a part of the exhibition ‘Wege nach Byzanz’ (‘Ways to Byzantine’) in February 2012. Created in cooperation with Sarah Nickel.

01 ICONODULIE

The first part of the installation deals with Icons who were worshipped by the Byzantine and the thereby resulting iconoclastic controversy.
For the exhibition 32 diffrent Icons were first abstracted and afterwards silk-screened in a size of 7.4cm x 10.5cm. The typography in the background was printed on cling film. Afterwards the printed typography was affixed on a plate (kapa line) and attached to the wall. Then the plate was prepped to hang up the cards with the icons on it.

02 IKONOKLASMUS

For The second part of the installation a video was created to show several events in history where destruction of icons was evident.

03 ICONS OF THE 21 CENTURY

Originally icons were created to represent the eternal form. But how is it seen today? This installation shows the popular cultural icons of the 20th and 21th century and the alteration of the meaning in the world of today. A survey was used to determine who is seen as an icon in this age.
